I am at an age where I can’t do what you are doing now but your writing and my imagination fill me with nature and being there with you I am a 77 year old male who hiked 700 miles on the AT at 70 till a knee injury ended the journey of self discovery. Your writing keeps my journey going Thank you for being so brutally honest and real. Peace, Bear Chaser
You're writing is so beautiful. I'm full of anxiety these days, the kind they lives in your stomach and grips and won't leave. This came at just the right time. And now I want to find some gnarnia of my own.
I’m learning so much from these posts. Fascinating about the generations-old bear trail! I guess no worry about sleeping in grizzly land because they’re consistently (it seems) terrified of the human scent? What do you do with your food stash at night? Also, what’s the brand/make of your shelters?
We kept our food in ursacks (bear resistant food bags). On this trip mine was a six moon designs lunar solo (I also use a zpacks duplex), my friend had a durston x-mid 2
Lovely narrative and images in all three Brooks Range chapters. Your area’s remoteness and your trio’s togetherness are inspiring. On the nudes, your description and images reminded me of this: “By walking naked you gain far more than coolness. You feel an unexpected sense of freedom from restraint. An uplifting and almost delirious sense of simplicity. In this new simplicity you soon find that you have become, in a new and surer sense, and integral part of the simple, complex world you are walking through. And then you are really walking.” Colin Fletcher, “The Complete Walker IV”, p.849, Knopf
The TikTok you described sounds like something Brittney Hartley would discuss. I follow her "No nonsense spirituality" content on Instagram, and her videos often breathe life into a tough day. I'm loving your recaps.
I've had that same hole in my mattress. I got a warranty replacement, and stuck some tape over those edges before I used it. Second mattress fine so far. Seems like a design flaw. Can you share what repair kit you take into the field?
For cheese, I pre cut cubes and individually vacuum seal them. I've had them at room temp for up to two months with no mold. I'm sure I had some luck there though.
Thank you for the beautiful writing and pictures as always.
